2011 SCCA National Championship Runoffs at Road America
Alan Captures a Spot on the Podium at his first Runoffs.
September 19-25, 2011
The week of September 19-25 was the 2011 SCCA National Championship Runoffs at Road America in Wisconsin. The culmination of the year's racing season, the Runoffs are by invitation only, with drivers earning the right to attend by meeting specific racing achievements during the current season. It is truly a chance to compete against the best of the best from across the country. This was Alan McCallum's first trip to the Runoffs due to a schedule conflict the previous year. It was a chance for Alan to once again go head-to-head with the top FM drivers after narrowly missing the podium at Infineon in August and suffering another disappointment at the NASA Championships at Mid-Ohio earlier in September. This time, Alan was not to be denied a trophy. Alan pulled into second place on the start behind Peterson who shot to the lead. Alan and Darryl Wills battled side by side through several turns during the first lap of the 4.0 mile track until Wills finally pulled ahead into second and took off after the leader. Alan held his position for the remainder of the race to come in third behind first place and Triple Crown/Super Sweep winner Darryl Wills and second place Doug Peterson, both multiple year champions.

Wills wins NASA National Championship after early spins on rain slick track.
September 8-10, 2011
The 2011 NASA Formula Car Challenge National Championships at Mid-Ohio saw top Formula Mazda drivers from across the country and Canada meet for the chance to compete for the title of National Champion. Alan, the defending 2010 National Champion in FM, was making his first visit to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course near Lexington, OH. Intermittent rain showers all week had teams scrambling at race time each day to get out on track with the best choice of tires for the track conditions. In Thursday's Qualifying Race 1, Alan finished in 4th position, then Friday he crossed the finish line in 2nd Place while posting the best lap time of the race. With the third fastest qualifying time for the week, Alan started Saturday's championship race in third position behind Doug Peterson on Pole and Darryl Wills in second. Austin Newmark, this year's winner of the Bondurant Racing Series and also running under the Texas Autosports banner, started in sixth position. The field took the track on rain tires after a hard rain during the previous race. Even so, track conditions would be a big factor as the cars running in front spun rounding the first turn after the start, quickly causing a traffic jam. Alan was able to maneuver through the chaos, but not without his left wing making contact with Darryl Wills' back right tire. Moving out in front, Alan lead the rest of lap one, but damage to the car's front wings caused braking problems that would send the him off track into China Beach on lap two. By race end, Wills had fight his way back to the front to finish in first followed by Zachary Silver in second, and pole sitter Doug Peterson in third.

Indy Weekend GoPro Formula Car Challenge in Sonoma- August 27-28, 2011 Results: 4th, 4th
Alan finishes 4th both days at Infineon but puts in a great performance.
August 27-28, 2011
In August, Alan and Moses Smith of Texas Autosports returned to Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA, for the GoPro Formula Car Challenge presented by Goodyear GP as one of the main supporting events for the INDYCAR GP of Sonoma. Having won back to back races at this event in 2010, Alan and the team were looking forward to another fun and exciting weekend. This year didn't disappoint with a field of 22 Formula Mazdas taking to the track including some of the country's fastest competitors. Alan clocked the fastest times during Thursday's practice.
In Friday afternoon's Qualifying 1 session Alan struggled to get in a fast lap in his #19 car, qualifying in fifth position. Saturday morning promised faster times with cooler weather and a fresh track, but battling with car setup, Alan qualified in sixth position for Saturday's race. Starting sixth for Saturday's race, Alan made a quick dash into second after the start only to be forced to give up the position to Slone a couple of turns later. Mid-way through the race, Mike Anderson got back around to regain third, pushing Alan into fourth. The Saturday podium was Wills, Slone and Anderson. With Saturday's race finish determining the lineup for race 2 on
Sunday, Alan started in fourth position. However, after some minor tweaks to the car following Saturday's race, the #19 car was running perfectly, and Alan was able to pass Anderson and Slone over the first half of the race and set out for Wills, who had pulled out ahead of the pack considerably and was leading the race running away. The rest of the race saw Alan slowly closing the gap between him and Wills. By the time the white flag flew Alan was within striking distance of the leader. But, it was not to be this day, as Alan suddenly spun off track in the first turn. Although he quickly regained the track, the mishap was enough to allow both Slone and Anderson to pass him. Sunday's finishing order was Wills, Anderson, and Slone with Alan retaining fourth place once again. It was a heartbreaker finish for Alan who had driven an outstanding race.

Alan suffers a disappointing crash at Road America
June 17-19, 2011
Alan's first trip to Road America served as a chance to see some new competition and to get some valuable seat time in at this legendary track in preparation for the SCCA Finals coming up in September. The first two days of qualifying were plagued by mechanical problems, but by race time on Sunday, the car was up to speed and ready to compete. Starting from the fifth position in FM, in a field that included over 40 FA, FC, and FM cars, Alan got off to a productive start, moving quickly into third place coming out of the second turn. Unfortunately, a spin soon left him deep in the pack and having to gradually fight his way back toward the leaders. With just two laps to go, a Formula Atlantic close in front of Alan suffered a sudden engine problem. Alan veered to the left in an attempt to avoid the slowing car, but the unfortunate timing and location sent Alan off the track, causing him to collide with a wall under a bridge in a violent crash that wiped out the left side of the car. The impact sent him careening into a sand pit and landed him against a concrete barrier. He was unhurt, but the car will need some major repairs before the next race. Race control scored Alan with a 10th place finish, completing nine of eleven laps.

Alan brings home a win at Texas World Speedway
May 28-29, 2011 at Texas World
Alan returned to Texas World Speedway this weekend for a second time with the goal of improving his record at this Texas track where he finished second and fourth two months before. This time it was with the Texas Autosports camp which was recently acquired by Moses Smith. The Texas summer was in full swing with temperatures touching 98 degrees. Added to the temperatures were high winds gusting to 30 mph. In Saturday's race, Alan was able to pilot his #19 Formula Mazda to his first Texas victory. On Sunday it was Darrell Wills finishing first followed by Davis Parr with Alan McCallum rounding out the podium finishing in third place. The weekend set a good tone heading to Road America for the SCCA June Sprints.

Alan's first appearance in his home state of Texas brings second place
and fourth place finishes at Texas World Speedway
March 4-6, 2011 at Texas World
Alan McCallum made his debut appearance on a Texas race track March 4-6, 2011, when he and Moses Smith Racing brought his #19 Formula Mazda to Texas World Speedway in College Station, TX, for the Lone Star Region's SCCA Super Tour Texas Two Step. This much anticipated weekend brought Alan the opportunity to go up against the 2010 SCCA National Champion, Darryl Wills of Deer Park, TX, plus the No. 2 on the podium at Nationals, Mike Anderson from Anza, CA. Alan and Darryl had faced each other once previously last August at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA, where Alan came away with back to back wins while Darryl battled car trouble both days. This was Alan's first matchup with Mike Anderson who races Star Mazda as well as Formula Mazda.
Saturday morning brought a rainy track for qualifying and once again at race time with Darryl, Mike and Alan qualifying 1, 2, and 3 in a field of eleven Formula Mazdas. During the race, Alan suffered two off track excursions, one resulting in a mandatory stop in the pits, ending with a fourth place finish behind Darry, Mike and Stuart Rettie, also of Houston. By race time Sunday, the sun was out and the track was dry. Wills, Anderson and McCallum once again qualified 1, 2, 3, but when it came time to move from the grid onto the track, Darryl Wills was unable to start his #1 car. Mike Anderson led the entire race followed closely by Alan with Russell Lindemann of Longmont, CO coming in third. Alan will return to Texas World Speedway again at the end of May.

A double dose of victory to start off the 2011 season for
Alan
McCallum and the Moses Smith Racing team
January 16-17, 2011
Alan McCallum, in his #19 Formula Mazda, kicked off the 2011 racing season January
16 & 17, at Phoenix International Raceway, at the Arizona Region SCCA Snowbird
Double National. The Event took place over the Martin Luther King Memorial Weekend,
with testing on Saturday and both Regional and National races on Sunday and Monday.
Sunday, the top spot on the starting grid was claimed by Jamie Sloneʼs #6, GoPro
Formula Mazda, with Alan following closely behind securing the second spot. After a
long wait on the starting grid, the race got underway, only to see a red flag when two
cars crashed leading into the first turn, sending Alan into the dirt to avoid the incident.
While waiting on the grid there was some miscommunication regarding the excess
earth Alanʼs car had accumulated from his off road excursion, that nearly landed him at
the back of the line up. Moses Smith made the call on the radio to leave the car as it
was and take a gamble that fortunately paid off. Still behind Jamie Slone, the restart was a clean one. Mid way
through the 29 lap race, Alan was able to pass Jamie and slowly extend his lead,
ultimately securing his first win of 2011. Sunday, qualifying on pole and leading every
lap of the race, pressured once again by Jamie Slone, Alan McCallum with the help of
Moses Smith Racing turned his 2011 season opener into back-to-back first place
finishes.
